Shrouded in mystery, born to secrecy.

Unlike the rest of Rhyst's races (or at least the ones we know of), Faerla didn't come about upon our lands, nor our oceans, nor via our hands. They are of an entirely different world- the Faewild, to be specific- and arrived through unknown means a great many years ago. They were first introduced by Felsen Skarn, who received their peoples and founded Arlandria with their aid. It was through the use of their Fae magic that much of the Weald, the vast forest where Arlandria remains, was grown and created. It's also said they had a hand in enhancing the Hederans of Skarn's design.

Appearance[edit]

Truly, the Faerla are odd-looking when you compare them to the rest of the humanoids on Rhyst. They have remarkably colorful skin and eyes, both of which usually take on an almost gem-like hue. While their eyes' glow is nothing compared to that of the Aurien's, in exchange, it's as if their entire physique glows instead... subtly, but nonetheless. Everything about their visuals implies they're out of place, like an alien on a different world. Their ears, though shorter than those of an Aurien, are often set beneath crowns of custom-cut gems and stones.

Their bodies are adorned with intricate tattoos and markings simply by nature, too. While many believed they were painted on at birth or something similar, we've since learned for certain that the Faerla are just born like this, with said markings already present. They seem to represent magical leylines and enhance their magic-casting abilities, but that is as of yet unproven. In terms of height, they are- thankfully- relatively normal. Taller than most, mind, but still more normal than you might expect, sitting at an average of 5'5" for males and 6'3" for females.

Culture[edit]

Faerlaen culture is one of the most sought-after truths in the whole world. Even if you hate them, or if you love them, the loss of Faerlaen culture is often viewed as one of the few great tragedies of Rhyst's magical history. They are, as far as is presently known, the only visitors from one of the other planes to ever stick around. If humanity knew of their history, their magic, or even how they themselves worked, the secrets of Fae magic- a notoriously powerful form of casting- would be unlocked on a grand scale. And yet it is gone nonetheless, even to members of the race itself.

Yggdrasil & the Loss of Fae Magic[edit]

Long, long ago, some three centuries past, Felsen Skarn stumbled upon the Faerla and established Arlandria as a home for them and his followers. In doing so, he established a pact with the Faerla and, in return for housing them in this new world, they taught him limited Fae magic. For many years, nearly a century, this relationship bloomed. Arlandria grew and with it so did the Weald, their forests coming to cover nearly half of their parent continent. In just a year alone, they'd retake miles and miles of territory in nature's name.

At some point, the crisis that initially split Felsen Skarn and Balin Sketch came to fruition. With the world on the brink of Armageddon, it's believed that Skarn engaged in a Fae ritual. Fae magic, you see, operates on sacrifice. Ordinary magic is simply mana manifested, but Fae magic... It demands more. Much more, in a way that scales horribly with the magnitude of the desired effect. It is equivalent exchange, if the rule of "equivalency" was dictated by a far-off malicious Fae Prince. Nonetheless, with the crisis at its peak, there wasn't another option, and the ritual was made complete.

The modern understanding of events is shaky thereafter, as few recall what proceeded. All that is known is that Yggdrasil appeared sometime after this in its infant form. Felsen Skarn had since vanished, and the Faerla were left henceforth without knowledge of the Faewild, nor the Fae magic that'd saved Rhyst on its very last moment.
