Introduction
Saul "Sawbones" Jones is an Umbra who escaped the Void long before the first generation of Umbra on Sarea. Clever and daring, Saul took the form of a Demon soldier and was convincing, able to hold it long enough to make it through a portal as a Demon soldier onto Rhyst. However, he was soon found to be missing, forced to go into hiding.
Background
It is said that on October 31st, Saul "Sawbones" Jones hid within a pumpkin stowed away on a colonizer ship headed to the island known as Sarea. This very pumpkin later became the iconic Saul "Sawbones" Jones pumpkin that we Saulheads all know and love.
Once arrived safely to Sarea, Saul's life and activist work began. By then, Providence had already been established along with the Church of the Verdant Flame. A long-time hater of the Void due to his Umbral heritage, Saul discovered the mystery of the Emerald Heart before anyone else, linking it to Nevanerro. Once discovered, he began his own secret anarchocommunist group in the sewers of Providence, scurrying in the shadows and combating the Empire's propaganda in secret. Nevanerro caught wind of this, however, and visited Saul one night in his dreams. He was taken to Sin City, the city of legend that Nevanerro worshipper and Naimmancer Xiao Long and her companions would discover years later. There, Saul met his first love, Rorschach, a poor soul doomed to many years in the casino there. After many a passionate night together, Rorschach divulged a secret way that Saul could get out of the Casino, take a shortcut to find Nevanerro, and take his crown. There, Saul planned to overthrow Nevanerro and ascend to the Voidly throne, using his newfound power to enact revenge against Vul'karik for his crimes against the Umbra and the plane of Rhyst that Saul had come to love.
It is not so easy to kill an Eidolon, however. Nevanerro discovered this plot, imprisoned Rorschach to another 500,000,000 years, and sent Saul back in time. He made a mistake, however, scrambling the timeline of Rhyst as we know it today due to a phenomenon we now refer to as the Sawbones Effect.
Now Saul "Sawbones" Jones, a man trapped in the past, future, and present, roams the island of Sarea, looking for the chosen one to help him achieve his goal once more.
Trivia
Saul is considered the Void's worst Binding of Isaac player -- having beat out the Void King who doesn't even know what video games are.
Saul also invented Anthrax because he's just an awful guy.
Despite being called "Sawbones", he doesn't own a saw, or have any bones.
