The Mooncaller

"Moonlight illuminates our path in the darkest of times."

Epithet: The Mooncaller[edit]

Introduction[edit]

Few fully understand why the Greater Spirits of Wind passed on, or grew weaker over time... But a possible source is the growing prominence of the moon- and our cosmos as a whole- as a source of power to draw from. While Sol's swelling influence has inflamed Amada's existing domain, Cygnus has come into being simply by virtue of the potency of the moon and what it means for magical casters who look to it for guidance.

Background[edit]

Long ago, humans were too distant from skilled magic-use to consider the cosmos anything but a backdrop for their squabbles. Each Convergence would see them ended, their play put on repeat once more. Thus, Spirits of the sun and moon were few and far in-between; weak, too, if at all present in the first place. Yet with recent events leading to magic-use en masse, the past few centuries have caused a boom in study of the stars and our surrounding sibling spheres.

And thus was Cygnus born, a representative of the colder and typically more "dormant" of the two celestial objects. The nature of its domain means Cygnus is the rarest of the Greater Spirits to catch on Rhyst itself, and thus it's also one of the most mysterious: while we're well aware that it's strongly tied to the moon, we aren't exactly sure what its values are, nor what the function of the moon is in the grander scheme of things. For all intents and purposes, Cygnus might as well be the Patron of hidden knowledge.

That being said, it has imparted- very rarely so, and only on nights of a full moon- "blessings of understanding" upon those who pray to it, instructing them to stray from magic and expressing that the world has swelled with too much power. Whether this is a general concern over the invasions of the Void and Faewild or more direct commentary on the growing population of magic-users across Rhyst, one can't say for certain. In either case, Cygnus' existence cements the moon as an intended creation of the dragons.

Trivia[edit]

We aren't sure if Zeal simply lost some of its power and dropped a class, or if it was outright "killed".

Some sects and orders are known to worship Cygnus and to reject conventional magic under its teachings.

Whether Cygnus is capable of visiting the moon- or whether it does at all- is currently unknown.

Cygnus represents purchase in a growing field of study around elemental Spirits that don't match mundane concepts (as opposed to Helios with Ash, or Eschen with the Oceans). Some think this has to do with the prevalence of magic and the beliefs of mortals reaching more abstract ideas.

With Fah’nadir’s return it has become clear that Cygnus is one of the rare spirits that may survive within the Astral Sea as one bound to the Rhystian matter that forms the Moon
