Eschen

"The seas know no master but the First Son of Dragons."

Epithet: The Conquerer of the Seas[edit]

Introduction[edit]

When Rhyst was young and the Dragons began their work in shaping its nature and its systems, they brought into being the spirits, conjurations of life that would in turn protect and care for their world. The eldest of these spirits was the greater spirit Eschen who was made in the image of the dragons. Eschen was granted dominion over the oceans of the world, for water was needed to support the ideas of creation. Countless aquatic spirits exist across Rhyst today, but they all serve Eschen just as much as they do the dragons, for every body of water finds its way to the sea eventually.

Background[edit]

Considered the son of the Water Dragon Melusine, Eschen is the oldest and mightiest of all of Rhyst’s spirits. His form is that of a massive dragon, a reflection of his creators. Before the rest of life upon Rhyst came to be, Eschen already reigned supreme, for the Dragons, unlike the Eidolons of the Void and the Faewild, did not wish for dominion over the world they chose to create. Instead, they intended to leave Rhyst to the spirits and all life that came after, and so Eschen would be seen as the height of power until the Eidolons themselves were discovered.

Eschen was the creator of mortal life, for though it was within the design of the Dragons that such creatures would come to be, it was Eschen who first formed the Esche from the salt foams and mana currents in the oceans. The Esche, bearing the name of the spirit who brought them into the world, aided Eschen in securing and maintaining his dominion of the seas and of Rhyst as a whole for some untold amount of time, for Eschen, great in his own right, bore the pride of the Eidolons themselves and wished to ensure his reign would never be questioned. As other spirits formed and were given their own domains by the Dragons, Eschen grew resentful, and by his orders did the Esche encroach on these territories. Though the Dragons themselves did not stop Eschen, the great storms that rolled across the world in this lost age were said to be Melusine’s warnings to her son, and those hurricanes that formed were his answer back, a statement that he would not quietly submit to sharing Rhyst. There are no true records of these wars, but tales from the spirits old enough to remember them have painted a picture of long and turbulent affairs that took to shaping the deeper formations of Rhyst that even the Cycle of Convergence has been unable to alter.

Today Eschen has grown far more wise and patient, though he is still known for his draconic arrogance. Though the Esche see him as a god, the Draconian offshoots of their race have sought to see beyond the spirit and toward the Dragons themselves who they now owe their patronage. Some Draconian seafarers have said the oceans are not safe for their kind, given Eschen is still a jealous spirit, though those more suited for the aquatic environs speak of protections granted to them by Melusine herself long before she disappeared.

Trivia[edit]

Eschen, though a prideful spirit, is still considered a benevolent force to most mortals, not in least due to the fact that he is the creator of mortal life

Eschen’s greatest rival is his sibling Vaiel, though the Dragons have long forbidden the two from slaying one another

Eschen is believed to play a major part in the Cycle of Convergence, for he has been tasked with being the supreme guardian between Rhyst and the outer planes. The violent storms and tidal waves that rock the world during these times of trial are actually the spirit drowning demons and fae in the waters he commands.
