The Unliving Hive

"This thing is dead, long dead, but has been practically waging war on the continent of Kal Azul just by existing."

Epithet: The Unliving Hive[edit]

Karrador was the third General of Vul'karik, the patron Eidolon of Demons and Undeath. It was a being that held the domain over the Undeath portion of Vul’karik’s power, being able to consume souls and add to its own power, as well as the spread of its influence seeming to cause undead to rise in the area around it. Even after it was slain in a battle with Amada, its presence continued to pollute the world, causing undead to rise around it, and causing tears of void energy to appear and spread along Kal Azul just from the existence of its corpse within the Astral Sea.

Background[edit]

Long ago, all the planes were one, until the Sundering caused it to shatter into the planes of Rhyst, the Faewild, Void, Limbo, and the Astral Sea. Vul’karik sought to unite the planes once more into the Eternal Void it had once been, and to this, selected champions to ravage the world in hopes of bringing under his say.

One of these Champions was Karrador. The General would lead Vul’kairk’s forces after the invasions of Mavkoda. The Felfire General would strike first, searing the world with wicked Felfire, and heading further inland, to another battlefield to repeat the process. The bodies that managed to survive would then be risen as undead, forced to fight and kill those that were once their friend, when the shadow of Karrador was cast like a horrible moon in the skies above. It is in this symbiotic relationship that the two generals brought large scale destruction to many areas, most prominently Kal Azul.

It was also this strategy that allowed for Karrador to be slain. Stirring within the Astral Sea, and drawing close to Kal Azul allowed for the Void General to fall within range of Amada, and of the sun. Using powerful beams, she struck Karrador, again, and again, until the general realized that they were close to death.

Yet even in death, it would not stop the advance of it’s master’s plans. Rather then fall to Amada herself, Karrador would create a ritual, using it to sap him of the last of his life force. This ritual would cause for it’s influence to persist after it had perished, and it’s body was lost within the Astral Sea. However, even with it’s life gone, it’s shadow over Kal Azul resulted in undeath and void tears continuing upon the nation long after. Additionally, those who died on the body of Karrador would then join it’s collective of souls, making these rituals stronger and rising as undead upon the corpse.

Modern History[edit]

In the decade of the 1010s, with the defeat of Nexus, Providence turned its gaze outwards, searching to correct the problems that still existed for Rhyst while the Convergence was on route. It was during this time that Karrador rose to prominence, after a teleportation incident caused an entourage of Providence personnel to be teleported directly to it. As a result, it was reported back to the city as a whole.

Empyrean 11, Locus, would be the one in charge of the mission of eliminating Karrador. Without fail, the Inquisitor at the time led a team to the corpse itself using their ability to teleport to eventually arrive. The rest of the team evacuated upon reaching the inner sanctums of Karrador, while Locus remained behind to strike the final blow, and end the General’s influence, once and for all.

However, the ritual that Karrador had used to sustain their influence had unexpected consequences. Upon their death, the power that the general had built up spilled into the world, causing for undead to rise in abundance across the plane of Rhyst. It was only when one took the crown of undeath that the rise was prevented;

But one must always hold the crown of undeath, or that awful power may spread over the plane yet again.

Trivia[edit]

While the corpse of Karrador was active, it was often called the Kal Azulan Hive.

Karrador was responsible for the rise of the Undead within the Blasted Steppe, although his influence is lessening with the crown of undeath being passed to a new holder.

A group known as the Star Paladins had been formed on the Hive proper, fighting against the horde of undead that lingered upon the entity.

It is not possible to bring great harm to a General without something of equal or greater strength. A certain tool was used by Providence to eliminate Karrador.
